Our neighbors and friends, Jim and Ginger McGrail, own and care for this vineyard located across Greenville Rd and just up the hill from us. The fruit is sooo good that we have been making a barrel of wine for their personal consumption since 2002 and since 2004 we have been able to purchase a little to share with you!
A classic Cab: cassis, black current and pencil lead. This wine offers fresh mojito-mint edges, is deepened by burnt sugar and topped off with exotic orchid. One sip and you know you are drinking a big wine. Chewy tannins support the powerful fruit structure dominated by a current-pomegranate reduction. The ripe fruit finish is manly with sweet, smoky tobacco being the last to remain.
Tasted on 12/10 – Fruit remains vibrant with cassis and black current as the top notes. The caramelized flavor brings to mind salted caramels and the exotic floral accents continue to weave their way through a fruit dominated nose. On the palate the wine is vibrant and intensely flavored with mouth-watering acidity supporting the firm tannins. After sipping, an interesting coffee-chicory note developed, perhaps a subtle metamorphosis of the tobacco flavors detected on first release.
